In the age of YouTube tutorials and Pinterest inspiration, it is tempting to look at every garden project and think, "I could do that myself for half the price."
At Joe's Fencing & Landscaping, we respect the DIY spirit. In fact, we encourage it! There are plenty of jobs where hiring a professional is a waste of your money. However, there is a fine line between a savvy saving and a "false economy." We have fixed enough leaning fences and sinking patios to know that some jobs are cheaper to do right the first time.
Here is our honest guide to what you should tackle yourself, and when it pays to call in the cavalry.
The Green Light: Perfect DIY Projects
These are low-risk, high-reward jobs. Even if you make a mistake, it’s easily fixed and won't cause structural damage or safety issues.
- Painting & Staining: Labour is the biggest cost here. If you have a spare weekend and a good brush, you can save hundreds by treating your own fences and decking.
- Planting: digging holes for shrubs and bedding plants is hard work but technically simple. It’s a great way to bond with your garden.
- Laying Gravel: Creating a simple gravel path or refreshing a driveway is mostly about heavy lifting. As long as you lay a weed membrane first, it’s a safe DIY win.
- General Maintenance: Jet washing patios, clearing gutters, and mowing lawns are tasks where your "sweat equity" saves you cash.
The Amber Light: Proceed with Caution
You can do these, but they require specific tools and a bit of know-how. If you get it wrong, you might be re-doing it in two years.
- Laying Turf: It looks easy, but 90% of the work is soil preparation. If you don't level the ground perfectly or add the right topsoil, you will end up with a bumpy, yellow lawn.
- Simple Panel Fencing: Replacing a single panel in existing concrete posts is easy. However, digging new posts in Bristol's rocky clay soil without a breaker is back-breaking work. If the post isn't deep enough, the wind will take it.
- Sleeper Beds: Stacking railway sleepers is doable for a strong DIY-er, but cutting them requires a powerful circular saw and safety gear.
The Red Light: Call the Professionals
These are the projects where "DIY" often leads to disaster. The cost of the specialized tools and the risk of failure usually outweigh the savings.
1. Paving and Patios
The Risk: Drainage. If you lay a patio without the correct "fall" (slope), water will pool against your house, causing damp. If the sub-base isn't compacted with a commercial "whacker plate," the slabs will sink and rock within months.
2. Retaining Walls
The Risk: Collapse. Holding back tonnes of wet earth requires engineering knowledge. We often see DIY walls bulging because no drainage was installed behind them. A collapsed wall is dangerous and expensive to clear up.
3. Large Decking Sub-Frames
The Risk: Longevity. Screwing the top boards down is the fun part. Building a level, rot-proof timber frame that doesn't bounce when you walk on it is the hard part. If the frame rots, the whole deck is scrap.
The "Hybrid" Approach: The Smart Compromise
Want to save money but still get a professional result? Try the hybrid approach.
You do the "Grunt Work": You clear the garden, rip out the old fence, and dispose of the green waste. This saves the landscapers hours of labour costs. We do the "Skill Work": We arrive to a clear site, install the structural posts, frame the deck, or lay the paving. You do the "Finish": You paint the fence or fill the planters yourself.
Value vs. Cost
Before you head to the hardware store, ask yourself: "Do I have the tools? Do I have the time? And can I afford to fix it if it goes wrong?" Sometimes, the best way to save money is to pay for quality that lasts 20 years instead of 2.
