1. Soften the Box with Curves
Most small courtyards are square or rectangular boxes. Filling them with a square deck simply reinforces that "boxed in" feeling.
The Idea: Introduce curves. A curved deck edge that sweeps into a gravel border or planting bed creates a sense of flow and movement. It tricks the brain into not seeing the rigid corners of the boundary walls, making the space feel organic and larger than it actually is.
2. The "Vertical Deck" (Cladding)
When you run out of floor space, look up. In a small garden, mismatched fences or ugly brick walls can make the space feel claustrophobic.
The Idea: We can continue the decking timber up the walls. By using the same material for the floor and the boundary (cladding), you blur the lines where the floor ends and the wall begins. This "infinity" effect is a classic interior design trick that works perfectly outdoors.
3. Light Wood, Big Space
Just like painting a small room white makes it feel bigger, the colour of your deck dictates the feeling of space.
The Idea: Avoid dark mahogany or slate grey stains if your garden is tiny and shaded. Opt for natural, light oak tones or pale composite boards. These reflect more light, brightening up dark corners and giving the illusion of an airier, more open terrace.
4. The Seamless Transition
If your garden is tiny, borrow space from your house.
The Idea: Match the level and direction of your decking boards to your indoor flooring. If you have wood flooring running lengthways in your kitchen, run the decking boards the same way outside. When the back doors are open, the eye travels along the continuous lines, making the garden feel like just another part of the living room.

You don't need an acre of land to create a sanctuary. With smart design choices, your small deck can be the most used "room" in your house.
