Creative Decking Ideas for Small & Large Gardens in Bristol

Whether you have a compact Victorian terrace in Southville or a sprawling lawn in Stoke Bishop, decking can transform your outdoor space. Discover our top design ideas for maximising potential in both small and large Bristol gardens.

One of the most common misconceptions we hear at Joe's Fencing is that you need a massive, flat garden to install decking. This couldn't be further from the truth.

In fact, some of our most stunning transformations have been in the tightest courtyard gardens in Bedminster and the steepest sloping plots in Totterdown. Decking is incredibly versatile. It can create space where there was none, level out uneven ground, and zone large areas into usable "outdoor rooms."

Whether you are working with a cosy square of concrete or a quarter-acre of grass, here are our top creative decking ideas to inspire your next garden project.

Decking Ideas for Small Gardens

In a smaller space, every inch counts. The goal is to create the illusion of space while ensuring the area is functional.

1. Change the Direction

It’s a simple visual trick, but it works. Laying your decking boards diagonally can make a small square garden feel significantly larger by drawing the eye to the longest possible line (corner to corner). Alternatively, narrow boards can make a space feel busy, while wider boards can make a small deck feel less cluttered and more expansive.

2. Built-In Storage Seating

Furniture takes up valuable floor space. In a compact Bristol terrace, we often recommend building bench seating directly into the perimeter of the deck. This serves a dual purpose:

  • It removes the need for bulky chairs that block flow.
  • We can build hinged lids into the benches, giving you waterproof storage for cushions and garden tools.

3. Split Levels for Depth

Even in a small garden, a slight change in level (just one or two steps up or down) can create distinct "zones"—for example, a lounging area and a BBQ area. This adds architectural interest and stops the garden from looking like a flat box.

Decking Ideas for Large Gardens

With a large garden, the challenge isn't creating space—it's managing it. A huge expanse of decking can look like a car park if not designed carefully.

1. Create "Outdoor Rooms" (Zoning)

Use your decking to define specific areas. You might have a main dining deck immediately outside the back doors, connected by a walkway to a separate "sundowner" deck at the bottom of the garden to catch the evening light. Pergolas are excellent for this, creating a roof over one section to define it as a lounge area.

2. Mix Materials

Break up the visual mass of a large deck by incorporating other materials. "Picture framing" your decking (using a darker board around the edge) looks fantastic. Alternatively, embedding a stone fire pit area into the centre of a wooden deck creates a stunning focal point and breaks up the timber texture.

3. Incorporate Planting

Don't just build a deck over your garden; build it into your garden. We can build planter boxes directly into the structure or cut holes in the deck to allow existing trees or large shrubs to grow through. This softens the hard edges and integrates the structure with nature.

The Bristol Special: Sloping Garden Solutions

We can't talk about Bristol gardens without mentioning hills! If you have a steep garden that is currently unusable, tiered decking is the ultimate solution.

Instead of expensive earth-moving and retaining walls, we build a timber frame over the slope. This allows us to create flat, usable terraces at different heights. Imagine stepping out of your back door onto a dining deck, then walking down three steps to a lower sun-lounging deck, all floating above a steep bank that was previously just brambles.

Lighting is Key

Regardless of size, lighting is the finishing touch that transforms a deck.

  • Small Gardens: Use subtle strip lights under the rim of built-in seating to create a glow without cluttering the space.
  • Large Gardens: Use post lights to mark walkways and uplighters to highlight trees or features incorporated into the deck.
