How to Design the Perfect Outdoor Deck: A Step-by-Step Guide

A great deck starts with a great plan. Don't just guess the size—learn how to zone your space, catch the best sun, and choose the right layout for your Bristol garden.

A deck is one of the best investments you can make for your home, but we often see homeowners make the same mistake: they focus on the material before they focus on the design.

At Joe's Fencing & Landscaping, we believe that how you use the deck is just as important as what it is made of. A beautifully built deck is useless if it’s too small for your dining table or sits in the shade during your favourite time of day. Here is our 5-step guide to designing a deck that fits your lifestyle perfectly.

1. The Furniture Test (Size Matters)

The number one regret we hear? "I wish we made it bigger."

Don't guess the dimensions. If you plan to have a 6-seater dining table, measure it. Then, add at least 1 metre of clearance on all sides so guests can slide their chairs back without falling off the edge.

Pro Tip: Before you call us, go into your garden with a tape measure and some string (or a hosepipe). Mark out the shape on the grass. Put your actual garden furniture inside the lines. Does it feel cramped? If so, push the lines out.

2. Chase the Sun

In Bristol, we need to grab every hour of sunshine we can get. The location of your deck should depend on when you plan to use it.

  • The Breakfast Spot: If you want morning coffee outside, face the deck East.
  • The Sunbather: For all-day sun, a South-facing deck is the gold standard.
  • The Entertainer: If you mostly host evening BBQs after work, a West-facing deck captures the last of the evening light (the "Golden Hour").

3. Zone Your Space

Don't just build one giant rectangle. Think of your deck like an open-plan kitchen/living room. You need distinct "zones."

  • Dining Zone: Needs to be near the kitchen doors for easy food transport.
  • Lounging Zone: Can be further away or on a slightly lower level (split-level design) to create a cozy, separate vibe.
  • Cooking Zone: If you have a BBQ, ensure it is positioned downwind of the seating area so you don't smoke out your guests.

4. Connect to the House

The best decks feel like an extension of the indoor living space. This is all about "flow."

If you have bi-fold or French doors, we can raise the deck sub-frame so the decking boards sit flush with your indoor floor level. This seamless transition makes your indoor room feel twice as big when the doors are open. Note: We leave a crucial drainage gap to ensure damp doesn't bridge to your house walls.

5. Plan for the Future

Think about the extras before the boards go down. Once the deck is built, retrofitting is a nightmare.

  • Lighting: Do you want spotlights in the steps? We need to run the cables through the frame before the top boards are fixed.
  • Privacy: Will you be overlooked? Incorporate taller posts into the design now to support a privacy screen or trellis later.
  • Hot Tubs: If you dream of a hot tub one day, tell us now. Standard residential decking isn't built to hold a tonne of water; we need to reinforce the sub-frame specifically for that load.

Design It Right, Build It Once

A well-designed deck changes how you live in your home. Take the time to plan it properly, and it will serve you for decades.
