Landscaping Projects in Bedminster, Bristol: Real Before & Afters

Bedminster is famous for its vibrant street art and Victorian terraces, but the gardens are often concrete squares trapped in the past. See how we transform cramped BS3 backyards into spacious, modern sanctuaries.

If you live in Bedminster, you know the struggle. You love the location, the community, and the proximity to North Street, but your garden? It’s likely a small, walled concrete patch that hasn’t been touched since the 1980s.

At Joe's Fencing & Landscaping, BS3 is one of our busiest areas. We specialize in unlocking the potential of these compact Victorian terraced gardens. It’s not about having more space; it’s about using the space better. Here are three typical "Bedminster transformations" we encounter and how we fix them.

1. The "Concrete Jungle" Transformation

The Before: A classic Southville/Bedminster scenario. The entire garden was paved with cracked, uneven concrete slabs. It felt cold, drained poorly, and offered nowhere comfortable to sit.

The Solution: Soften and Zone.

  • We broke up the concrete (hard work, but necessary!) and installed a sleek Porcelain Patio near the house for dining.
  • To add softness, we laid a small section of high-quality Artificial Grass. In small, shadowed gardens, real grass often turns to mud, so artificial is a cleaner, year-round option.
  • The Result: A modern, multi-textured space that feels like an outdoor living room rather than a prison yard.

2. The "Bowling Alley" Fix (Narrow Gardens)

The Before: A long, thin strip of lawn with a path running straight down the middle. This layout makes a narrow garden feel even narrower and draws the eye straight to the back fence.

The Solution: The "Zig-Zag" Effect.

  • We removed the straight path and created two distinct zones: a decking area for coffee in the morning sun and a rear patio for evening sun.
  • We connected them with a winding gravel path and offset raised sleeper beds.
  • The Result: By forcing the eye to move left and right rather than straight back, the garden instantly feels wider and more interesting.

3. The "Goldfish Bowl" (Privacy Issues)

The Before: With high density housing, this client felt overlooked by three different neighbours. They never used the garden because they felt they were on stage.

The Solution: Vertical Screening.

  • We installed Horizontal Slatted Fencing. This looks contemporary and stylish, but we extended the height with trellis toppers to block sightlines from upstairs windows without blocking the light.
  • We built a bespoke Timber Pergola over the seating area. This provides a "ceiling" that blocks the view from above, creating a cozy, private hideaway.
  • The Result: A secluded sanctuary in the heart of the city.

4. Handling the "Terrace Access" Challenge

One reason many Bedminster residents put off landscaping is the access. "How will you get a digger through my hallway?"

We are experts in restricted access logistics. We use micro-excavators that fit through standard doorways and use floor protection systems to ensure not a speck of mud touches your hallway carpet. We understand the architecture of Bedminster homes and plan our logistics accordingly.
