Gardening in the UK is a year-round commitment. Just as you wouldn't wear a winter coat in July, your garden requires different care depending on the month. This is especially true in Bristol, where we experience everything from soggy, mild winters to surprisingly scorching summer heatwaves.
At Joe's Fencing, we often see damage that could have been prevented with a little seasonal foresight. A fence that blows down in a January storm often showed signs of weakness in October. A deck that is slippery in March usually wasn't swept in November.
To help you stay ahead of the weather, here is our quarterly guide to garden care for every Bristol homeowner.
Spring: The Big Wake Up (March - May)
As the days get longer, your garden comes out of hibernation. This is the most critical time for inspection and cleaning.
- Inspect Boundaries: Winter storms may have loosened fence posts or damaged panels. Walk your perimeter and give every post a "wobble test." Catching a loose post now is far cheaper than replacing it later.
- Wash the Deck: Algae and moss thrive in damp winter conditions. Use a stiff brush and a dedicated decking cleaner to scrub your timber or composite deck. This prevents it from becoming a slip hazard.
- Check Gates: Timber swells in winter. If your gate has been sticking, wait for a dry spell in late spring to see if it shrinks back. If not, it may need a slight adjustment or planing.
Summer: Protection and Enjoyment (June - August)
Summer is for enjoying your garden, but the sun can be just as damaging as the rain.
- UV Protection: UV rays bleach wood and dry out natural oils, leading to cracking (checking). Apply a high-quality UV-protective oil or stain to your fences and decking if they look dry or grey.
- Manage Vegetation: Plants grow fast in summer. Cut back heavy climbers (like ivy or wisteria) from your fences. The weight of a full-leaf vine can pull a fence down, and the foliage traps moisture against the wood.
- Water Wisely: Avoid positioning sprinklers where they constantly hit your fence panels. The constant wetting and drying cycle accelerates rot.
Autumn: Prepare for the Damp (September - November)
Autumn in Bristol is beautiful, but falling leaves are the enemy of timber structures.
- Clear the Leaves: This is the golden rule. Do not let piles of wet leaves sit on your decking or against the bottom of your fence. They create a "compost heap" effect that rots wood rapidly.
- Clear Drainage: If you have retaining walls or gravel boards, ensure drainage holes are clear of debris. You want water to flow away from your structures, not pool behind them.
- Secure Loose Items: As the autumn winds pick up, ensure garden furniture and trampolines are secured. We have seen many fences smashed by a flying trampoline during a storm!
Winter: Defence and Security (December - February)
When the temperature drops, your main goal is security and damage limitation.
- Lock the Gate: With darker evenings, security is paramount. Ensure your side gates have robust locks and bolts. A closed gate is a strong deterrent to opportunists.
- Avoid Rock Salt: If your path or deck freezes, use sand or a salt-free ice melt. Standard rock salt damages timber and can stain patio slabs.
- Turn Off Water: Drain outside taps and hose pipes to prevent pipes from bursting in a hard frost.
